Discrimination in Flagler Schools?
I hope this is not true. I really think it is not accurate, and I hope that the district quickly puts theses allegations to rest. Being in the school system, I have never witnessed this. If I had witnessed this, I would have spoken up, and I believe others would too.

(PENSACOLA, Fla. (AP) — A federal civil rights complaint alleges that black children in five Florida school districts are suspended from school, arrested at school or given other punishments at a higher rate than other students.)
Would this be 'discrimination" if the black kids did things to get suspended or other punishments at a higher rate then other students??

Skin color should never be an issue - bad behavior, definately and I agree with the above comments.

I thought all of the same things when I read the article. I don't believe the accusations to be true. I'm so sick of individuals and groups being sue happy! I hope Kristy Gavin releases records to dispel these claims soon.

There is no discrimination when you treat the violation of a rule equally within the group of violators. If it is true that black children are the subjects of discrimination in Flagler County then it is because there are more black children violating the rules, not because they are black and that is not discrimination, IMO.
If we look back in time when schools were segregated, in an all white school it could have been said white children were discriminated against because only white children were charged with violations of rules. Sounds fairly dumb don't you think?
The people who are in the system, employed by the system, and judged by the parents and guardians of Flagler County Children have done nothing short of breaking their backs to make sure there is zero discrimination in our schools in Flagler County Florida. I am getting more and more concerned when discrimination is used where discrimination does not and is not allowed to exist, at least in the openness of the public education system. Al Sharpton? Sure, he would be welcomed in a heart beat. Why? Because there is nothing to hide Al, bring it on. Come to a place that has gone way beyond the days of segregation. It is time that all ethnic groups and races of people come together to understand what all of us can do to help with the children that are violating the rules no matter who, what, or where they live. Maybe we should attend each others churches and listen to what is being said about each other. I think all people in attendance would hear is nothing but good things. Then maybe the parents and guardians of our children can finally put a stop to all this nonsense about discrimination. Oh I do not mean to write there is none. When it is found it is dealt with very quickly and professionally. Keep in mind that some people will never agree with the findings and rule of law no matter what we do. But the majority needs to be redefined in America. The majority people is "American Citizen". The minority is not "skin color", it is "American Citizen". When we all finally get that straight we can move past the old dead history and move into the equability of no discrimination. God Bless America! Amen?

The traditional (lately called conservative) approach to societal issues is the guarantee of equal opportunity.
By quoting the statistics in such manner, FlaglerLive reveals what has become a trademark of the liberal approach to societal issues...the guarantee of equal outcome.

The problem is not whether or not these students are disproportionately misbehaving. The problem is that there is no way to really know. Considering the higher level disciplinary action in Flagler County (and the other counties) versus other counties with a similar or even higher ratio of black students, the numbers are alarming.
If the disciplinary action rules are vague, then it opens up the potential for people to inadvertently discriminate. A teacher or the principle may not be overtly prejudiced, but may have a subtle inclination to punish a black student more harshly. This so-called "liberal" agenda is NOT meant to produce equal outcomes. It's meant to discern the difference in outcomes equally. If the rules on disciplinary action are more concrete, there'd be no question as to whether discrimination is the reason for a higher number of disciplinary actions for black students in these particular counties.
The bottom line is not that it isn't fair that these children have been disciplined. The issue is that there's no way to tell for sure if it's discrimination, or if there is some underlying sociological issue that community and education leaders must address.

I see an embedded oxymoron there.

They should consider the demographics of an area too. I mean more crimes are committed in poorer areas. More drugs, ect. Our community has very high unemployment which in turn effects a lot of other areas of life. Do the other communities have the same unemployment as here? Is everything equal in the areas they studied. I doubt it.

You have got to take anything the Southern Poverty Law Center says with a gain of salt. The are some of the worst fear mongers out there. The don't get funding if they can't find injustice under every rock and behind every corner. This is also the same group that says all militias are racist and any critisism of Isreal is anti-Semitic.
