Memorial day in Palm Coast
We attended our town's Memorial Day service this morning at 8:00 A.M. There were free Dunkin Donuts and coffee for all! The color guard was very disciplined. The bag pipes played Amazing Grace, the 5 to 7 year old girl scouts sang several songs and said the pledge of allegiance after which they said their scout pledge.
A young lady sang the National Anthem very traditionally.
The Mayor, City Manager, city council, George Hans, Alan Peterson, John F. Pollinger, Gail Wadsworth, Kimble Medley, Melissa Holland, and Nate McLaughlin were there along with the police and firefighters. There may have been more but I did not see any more.
The people came out today in the midst of a Tropical Storm. The service was moved into a fire station which kept us all dry. Let me tell you I was so proud and full of emotion. All the guys I served with that never made it home flashed through my mind. The Son's of the American Revolution reminded us that no one ever rode horses telling everyone the British were coming. They were all British and that, they reminded would not have made a lot of sense! They told us the Red Coats were coming. Most important though was that he reminded that people have been dying for this country before it was a country.
I hope more people were able to attend another memorial service this day. At 3 P.M. there is a moment of silence. Take 5 minutes out of your day of food and fun to pause and give thanks to those who never return.
And yes, I shed some tears today. Some were of course for the fallen soldiers that gave all which this day is about. But I also shed a tear or two because of the participation. Parents, teachers, scout leaders had taught these kids well. It is things like this that remind us America is strong and in good hands. Where is the reporting of the good things these kids do? It is there but the bad things are so numerous that we at times do not remember the good. We have three ceremonies which we can choose to attend here but this one is my city. Palm Coast, Florida, I am so proud of you today. Thank you for remembering the people who died to keep us free again this year, thank you.

We were at the Elks for their annual service. We to moved it indoors. It was very moving. We had a free breakfast of eggs, sausage, potatoes and more. Nice way to start the day by honoring our fallen heroes and those heroes still with us.

Vietnamvet: Were you at the one at the government building? My son was part of the AJROTC colorguard there. He passed out on the stage and they had to transport him to the hospital......after 4 hrs they released him. Possible overheat and locking of the knees.

I think PC did an excellent job in building Heroes Park--small, intimate and meaningful.

Towerflower,
I saw that when it happened. I am glad to hear that he's okay. I had asked Mr. Petito and several paramedics, afer the ceremony, if he was going to be okay. Our son is a Boy Scout and he's been the flag bearer several times. He says he gets hot and a little nervous and sometimes forgets about his knees. I'm glad your son is better. He held the Flag quite proudly.

Vet,
I know I told you I would be there, but something occurred that prevented me from going. I apologize to you and to the military personnel who have dedicated themselves to protecting our rights.
As I think I told you my wife works with the Army ROTC at Embry Riddle and that was the conflict that occurred, an event there that was great.
Again, to you and all who gave some, and to those who gave all, May God Bless You All.

I enjoyed both ceremonies, today. One was held for Palm Coast at the firestation down the street from Heroes Park and the other was at the Government Services Building. I was asked why I didn't have a name tag on for my candidacy. My answer was very simple. It's not appropriate. My father served in Korea, my uncle served in Viet Nam and my husband served as a firefighter in the Air Force during the last years of Viet Nam. He was never deployed.
Today is a day set aside to observe, honor and thank those who gave the ultimate sacrifice so we, the living, can enjoy the lives they secured for us with their blood. It's not about votes, it's about thanks. I did wear the colors of our Country, red, white and blue and went to the cook out at the VFW on Old Kings Road. Each and every story told is different and just pulls on the heart strings. The piping of Amazing Grace brings tears to my eyes every time. Each story ends with the same sentiment, each Veteran would do it all again.
A humble and heartfelt thanks to all who served and for all you gave to this Nation.

Thank you for your concern, I wasn't there when it happened and got a phone call which was garbled in where I heard Fire Department and my son's name--never good to hear those used together. The firefighter had to go outside to get a clear signal to tell me what happened. I heard he fell right into a chair so he didn't hit his head on his way down. They said he was dripping in sweat which surprised me with it being inside of the building and not outside. He said he didn't feel dizzy before it happened. His biggest concern was whether or not the flag hit the ground or if someone was able to catch it. He's worried that they'll be angry with him if the flag hit the ground. What troop does your son belong to? Mine is with 403 in Ormond, he is a Life Scout and only needs to do his Eagle project to reach the Eagle rank.

My son is with Troop 402, the Palm Coast United Methodist Church. He is also Life Rank and working toward Eagle. He will be on staff this year at Camp LaNoche as part of the National Youth Leadership Training program. I do not believe the Flag hit the ground. Honestly, I was more worried with his fall. I do know the other young man holding the other flag was given the US Flag to hold. No one should be angry with him. It was warm inside the Chambers. They should have turned the air down to allow for all of the guests today.

402 is a great troop, SM Tony is really good with the boys and we have considered going to that troop. He is still waiting to hear if he was chosen to go to NYLT this year (keeping my fingers crossed for him).
I told him what you saw and he feels better now about the flag. Now he just has to live with the ribbing that will surely come and learn to laugh about it.

Yes, but think about what he has learned. Bend your knees and stay hydrated.

I am very glad to hear that your son is doing well. I was at the ceremony because my son was holding the Airforce flag for FPC. Tell your son that I don't think the flag hit the ground, but it was quickly handed to another ROTC student that was on the stage to hold in place of the other flag that he was holding. On a lighter note, when I asked my son what happened, he said "he locked up his knees and it cuts off the circulation and you pass out" so after the incident my son said that he kept moving his legs around for fear he would meet the same fate!! Glad the chair was there, which my son said looked very comfy, to break his fall a bit. So glad that your son is doing better. It made my heart jump up into my throat because I don't like to see things like that happen to anyone. Thank your son for his dedication and for giving me more gray hairs!!

Yes, the Flag-bearer fell right back into a chair. He looked a little 'grey', and was promptly tended to. As a career Navy retired sort of guy, I've seen this time and time again with the locked knees. Out of enthusiasm of performing in an exemplary manner, especially in high visibility settings some of us lose concentration on not locking our knees, caught up in the moment. Your son and his fellow JROTC members did a fantastic job Monday, and please thank him on my behalf for volunteering to participate in the ceremony.

towerflower,
No I was not there.
I hope all is well for your son. It is the young people that will carry the honor of this country forward and people like him is the answer to the question, "Where is the youth of this country going?"
In the service there are many times this happens. The reasons have already been stated here. The good thing is he was checked out by medical staff.
I have seen the AJROTC color guard before. They make a Citizen proud!
Herb, not every person can attend due to family or or other obligations. It is what is in our hearts through out the years when it is not a day of any special displays and what we each do to honor the heroes that gave all they had for our country.
