Default Flagler County Deputy FIRED!

http://www.wesh.com/news/24269760/detail.html

A Flagler County Sheriff’s deputy has been fired after he was stopped for speeding when police found cocaine in his vehicle, according to police in Volusia County.

Robert Carroll, 36, was stopped for speeding on Friday near Ormond Beach when deputies there found a gram of cocaine on the floor near his feet, according to police.

A passenger in the vehicle, Eric Johnson, 32, was also placed under arrest because the two men said it was the other who owned the drugs, according to police.

Johnson is a registered sex offender.

He was a FCSO deputy for only four months.

Quote:
Carroll received his corrections officer certification in January and started in March. He was last employed as a loan officer in Melville, N.Y., between June and August 2009, Johnson said.

Flagler County Sheriff Donald Fleming said Carroll was fired the same day he was arrested because "we hold law enforcement officers to a higher standard.

"They are put in a position of public trust," Fleming said

That makes 4 Officers in a month here in Flagler County? 1 in Flagler Beach, 2 in Bunnell, and now chalk one up for FCSO! Do we have anymore bad apples?

What really blows me away is that this so called Deputy was with a sex offender to top it off. Lets be real here, do we need to do a more in depth background check on who the county hires and investigate who they are hanging around with before employment?

Depends on his crime, he was 20-21 when it occured, it involved a person under the age of 16.
May have been statuatory, still wrong of course...but if it were consensual I don't see it as awful as if it were not.

I know a man who was 25, his girlfriend 15. They dated, the had sex, they moved in together, and they eventually got married, and they have a son. This was 21 years ago, and they are still together. I thought terrible thoughts about him at the time, but no longer.

Some people labeled sex offender really shouldn't be, IMO.

The cop should not have been speeding nor have had drugs in his car.

Well in this case, he is a Deputy, he should have not been with the sex offender in his vehicle to begin with nor should he be associating with a felon. If this is the kind of Deputy or who knows, other Officers you want working to protect and serve including positions to be around children in our local schools, that is truly your opinion to pursue and preach. The facts are they both were arrested and I am glad to see the Sheriff putting his foot down and not wasting tax payer time to fire the bad apples that need to be gone. Flagler County needs to clean house and believe me I have my reasons when I say clean house. And on another note my daughter went to join the Sheriffs Explorers here and when we pulled up at the Sheriffs Office she had noticed another teen there who is always smoking marijuana. She did not even bother getting out of the car and we left. Or how about the Deputy who pulled me over a few months ago for no particular reason and after giving me a warning that 1 of 2 of my tag lights were out, proceeded to hit on me and gave me a business card with a cell number on it which I still have, I even expressed I am married as he was persistant to shove a card in my hand for a date. And if you are wondering if I reported that incident, no, I do not want to be stalked and bluelighted everytime I pull out of my driveway.

I have to say I can see both sides of the fence here. One side, he shouldn't have been with a sex offender, the other side, we do not know the circumstances of the sex offenders crime. With that said, I do not wish to be associated with sex offenders, but at the same time I do not ask if you are a sex offender when I meet you. In fact, I don't know if it is something that would ever come up in conversation. Hmmm, now I must be careful I see.

The real problem is the deputy breaking the law by speeding and caught with drugs in his car. In my opinion, the FCSO did the right thing firing the guy.

A little clarification.. He had no authority beyond the walls of the jail (no arrest powers) but he wore the same uniform and represented the Sheriff's Office when he did.
As much as it is frustrating/sickening for people hear of such incidents it is even moreso for the majority of law enforcement personnel who do the right thing day in and day out. But know that they too are equally glad the few bad ones get caught. No one wants to knowingly work or associate with them and while the media concentrates on the bad one, the good ones push on never losing focus of the job they are sworn to do.

I have to ask, because I do not know. In Ny, the Police Department had Internal Affairs, which were the police who police the police. They were accountable for finding and getting the bad ones out. Is there such a division in the FCSO? Is there a means to weed out the bad ones?

I ask this because I do believe there are good cops, and I know it must make them sick when they put their lives on the line every day, only to have a fellow officer drag the departments name in the mud.

Yes FCSO has an I.A. division.

Sex offender is different from sexual predator. I know two men on the list personally. One met a girl who said she was 18 and she wasn't. But because she sent nude photos of herself he got charged with child porn and another man who was 18 and his girlfriend was 16, he was black and she was white and her daddy blew his gasket and charged him with statatory rape. So I am not ready to hate the cop for being friends with a registered sex offender. So am I. As Lilith and I pointed out, best thing to do is find out what they were charged with before you sign them off as an evil monster.

The REAL crime here is the fact he had cocaine. I don't care who's it was considering where it was found he either knew it was there or was really that stupid as to not use the skills he was suppose to have learned in the academy. In other words, bad cop. If he didn't know his friend was a cocaine user/dealer he couldn't have been an excellent cop

From the DBN-J story linked in post #2 above:

Quote:
A request Wednesday by The Daytona Beach News-Journal for Carroll's jail photo was denied. Volusia County spokesman Dave Byron said it is the policy of the corrections department not to release a law enforcement officer's photograph because a state exemption for that record exists.
